The 2023 Heisman Trophy race was as tight as it gets, with LSU’s Jayden Daniels eventually prevailing over Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. Despite opening as a massive longshot, Daniels recorded nearly 5,000 total yards of offense. He secured 503 first-place votes to win the Heisman Trophy.

Below, see how the 2023 Heisman Trophy odds changed over the course of the three-month season.

USC quarterback Caleb Williams opened as the +450 favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, an 18.18% implied probability of winning the award for the second straight year. There is only one college player in history who has won the Heisman twice (Archie Griffin, 1974 & 1975).

Heisman Favorites 2023

  • Dec. 2: A subpar performance from Oregon’s Bo Nix in the Pac-12 title game allowed LSU’s Jayden Daniels to soar to the top of the 2023 Heisman odds.
  • Nov. 5: Nix (+196) is now the second-favorite, narrowly behind Penix (+148). No other player is shorter than +775 (McCarthy) after Week 10.
  • Oct. 22: A subpar performance from favorite Michael Penix Jr in Washington’s 15-7 win over Arizona State allowed Michigan’s JJ McCarthy to jump him in the Heisman odds. After blowing out Michigan State 49-0 on the road, McCarthy is now +211 to win, on average, with Penix at +267. LSU’s Jayden Daniels improved to third-favorite (+458) with a 62-0 demolition of Army.
  • Oct. 15: After leading #7 UW to a huge comeback win over #8 Oregon, Penix Jr became the -137 odds-on favorite. It helped that Williams had a second straight subpar performance during USC’s 48-20 setback at Notre Dame. The reigning Heisman-winner faded all the way to seventh (from +251 to +2440).
  • Oct. 8: Penix Jr (+209) is narrowly ahead of Williams (+247) midway through the season with Nix (+644) and Gabriel (+930) the only other players shorter than +1000.
  • Sep. 24: Another huge week from Michael Penix Jr (+370) has launched the Washington pivot ahead of reigning Heisman-winner Caleb Williams (+411).
  • Sep. 10: After Texas’ stunning road upset of the Alabama, Longhorns QB Quinn Ewers improved to the +775 second-favorite , while Bama pivot Jalen Milroe faded from +2800 to +11000.
  • Sep 4: Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. became the second favorite in the Heisman odds (+825 average) after tossing five TD passes in a Week 1 win over Boise State. LSU’s Jayden Daniels, meanwhile, faded to +3500 after suffering an upset loss to Florida State.
  • Jul 17: UNC’s Drake Maye continues to slide in the Heisman odds, as he’s now sitting as a +1700 longshot bet after opening at +1000.
  • May. 1: Williams has faded from +425 to +500 following spring practice, while LSU’s Jayden Daniels has improved from +2000 to +1750.
  • Jan. 10: No surprise here. Reigning Heisman-winner Caleb Williams has opened as a sizable favorite to repeat in 2023.
