The Detroit Red Wings (5-5-1) head to the Windy City to take on the Chicago Blackhawks (5-7-1) in a Wednesday Night showdown on November 6, 2024. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:00 PM Eastern Time at the United Center, with national coverage provided by TNT.

The Red Wings enter as slight road favorites at -120, while the over/under is set at 6.5 goals. Can Detroit continue their recent success against Chicago and secure an important road win? Let’s take a closer look.

Here is our Red Wings vs Blackhawks prediction for Wednesday Night Hockey.

Red Wings vs Blackhawks Prediction

I’m backing the Red Wings in this Original Six tilt. Detroit owns Chicago lately, taking four of their last five meetings. The Wings flat-out dominate this rivalry historically too, holding a 375-277-84-17 edge all-time.

Lucas Raymond paces the Wings’ attack with 11 points, while DeBrincat (9 points) and captain Larkin (8 points) chip in consistently. Watch for Patrick Kane to bring some extra juice against his old squad.

While the Red Wings have had some difficulty scoring consistently, averaging 2.63 goals per game (29th in the NHL), they have a great matchup against a Chicago defense allowing 3.15 goals per contest. The Blackhawks have particularly struggled on home ice, going just 1-3.

Not to mention, the Hawks are returning from a challenging five-game road trip on the West Coast. The fatigue from the road trip could be a factor, especially considering this is their first game back at the United Center.

On the other hand, the Red Wings haven’t played since Saturday, which means they should be well-rested and prepared for this rivalry showdown.

Between the pipes, Detroit holds the edge. Cam Talbot stands tall with a .923 save percentage and 2.73 GAA. Meanwhile, Chicago’s Petr Mrazek struggles, posting just a .900 save percentage (35th league-wide) and a shaky 3.02 GAA.

Detroit’s defensive pairing of Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson, who have combined for 2.8 defensive point shares, should be able to limit the production of Chicago’s young stars, including Connor Bedard. The Red Wings rank 13th in the league, allowing 34.7 shots against per game over their last 10.

While the Blackhawks have some dangerous offensive weapons and are coming off two straight wins, the Wings are my best bet. The red and white team is more well-rested, has better goaltending, and has dominated the rivalry recently.

Red Wings vs Blackhawks Odds

Team Spread Moneyline Total
DET Red Wings -1.5 (+200) -120 Over 6.5 (+110)
CHI Blackhawks +1.5 (-275) Even Under 6.5 (-130)

The Red Wings are currently favored to win, with the moneyline set at -120. This means a $120 bet on Detroit would return a profit of $100 if they get the victory. The Blackhawks are slight underdogs at even money (+100).

Detroit is listed at -1.5 (+200) on the puck line, while Chicago is +1.5 (-275). A Red Wings puck line bet would require them to win by 2+ goals for a $200 profit on a $100 wager. The Hawks puck line would cash if they win or lose by a single goal.

The game total is set at 6.5 goals, with the under favored at -130 and the over at +110. Oddsmakers see a fairly low-scoring contest, which aligns with the teams’ recent head-to-head trends (four of the last six meetings have gone under or pushed).

Oct 21, ’23 DET DET 4 – 2 DET -145 P 6.0

The Red Wings have won three of the last four games when favored, while Chicago’s only recent win came as a home underdog. The over/under trends have been fairly even, with two overs, two unders, and two pushes in the last six head-to-head meetings.

The Hawks come in hot, riding a two-game win streak after their rough start. Their offense clicks lately, too – they’ve created 11+ high-danger chances in three of five games. But don’t let that fool you.

On the flip side, the Red Wings are just 1-2-1 in their last four games and have been outshot in nearly every game this season. However, their special teams have been a bright spot, with their power play ranking 7th in the NHL and their penalty kill at a respectable 75%.
